Biografia

He was born on April 21, 1897, near La Jose, Pennsylvania, into a farming family that later moved to Akron, Ohio. He grew up without a firm religious upbringing, but at seventeen, in 1915, he was converted after hearing a street preacher urge his listeners to cry out to God for mercy.

From then on, he devoured books on theology, church history, and Christian mystics in libraries and secondhand bookshops, without ever attending seminary. This self-taught formation, which crossed Protestant, Catholic, and Quaker traditions, would give his future preaching a tone uncommon among evangelical pastors of his time.

In 1919 he began his pastorate in the Christian and Missionary Alliance, serving small congregations in West Virginia and Indiana. In 1928 he took charge of Southside Alliance Church in Chicago, where he would remain for 31 years, becoming known for sermons more concerned with the presence of God than with growth methods.

He married Ada Cecelia Pfautz, with whom he had seven children, six boys and one girl. Tozer lived absorbed in study, writing, and travel, and biographers, especially Lyle Dorsett, document that he was an emotionally distant father, leaving Ada to raise the children almost entirely on her own, alongside an informal ministry of welcoming the poor and lonely of the church. After being widowed and remarrying, Ada would later say she had never been as happy as in her second marriage, a sign of the price Tozer’s dedication cost his own family.

In 1948 he published The Pursuit of God, a brief treatise on intimacy with God that would become a classic of evangelical spirituality. From 1950 he began editing the periodical of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, using the space to engage the whole evangelical church, which unsettled pastors who expected a purely denominational bulletin.

In 1959, already holding honorary doctorates from Wheaton College and Houghton College, he left Chicago to pastor Avenue Road Church in Toronto, where he would remain until his death. He also published The Root of the Righteous in 1955 and The Knowledge of the Holy in 1961, deepening his case for a faith that was more contemplative and less activist.

He died in Toronto in the early hours of May 12, 1963, of coronary thrombosis, at the age of 66. Memorial services were held in Toronto and Chicago, and his remains were later moved to Akron, Ohio, the city where he grew up.

His books, many compiled after his death from sermons and notes, continue to shape generations of Christians seeking a faith deeper than religious activism. His insistence on seeking the presence of God, not merely doctrine about God, remains a living call to the church today.

“The world is perishing for lack of the knowledge of God, and the church suffers for lack of His presence.”

Contribuições
1

Renewal of contemplative spirituality

He recovered within 20th century evangelical Protestantism a tradition of prayer and contemplation that many considered the exclusive territory of Catholicism and medieval mysticism.

2

Critique of religious activism

He insisted that religious activity without a real experience of God's presence is empty, a warning that continues to echo in churches focused on methods and programs.

3

Personal simplicity

He lived simply, without a car of his own, refused royalties on the paperback editions of his best-selling books, and gave part of his salary back to the churches he pastored.

4

Vast written and editorial work

As pastor and editor, he shaped the devotional taste of generations of evangelical readers, far beyond the bounds of his own denomination.

Legado missionário

His books now circulate translated into dozens of languages and are common reading for spiritual formation among missionaries and workers around the world.

He served within the Christian and Missionary Alliance, a denomination born from the missionary impulse of Albert B. Simpson, whose biography he himself wrote.

His emphasis on seeking the presence of God first, before any strategy, continues to shape the spiritual formation of those preparing for the mission field.

By recovering mystic writers from other Christian traditions, he helped evangelicalism engage with churches of other backgrounds, a value central to cross-cultural work.
