Kuruaya
UnreachedThe Kuruaya are an indigenous people who live in the state of Pará, on the right bank of the Curuá River, a tributary of the Xingu basin. The elders say the very name of the people is tied to this river, where they settled after migrating from the Tapajós region, following a separation from the Munduruku. Records about the Kuruaya appear in accounts of missionaries, travelers, and colonial authorities of Pará since early times, showing this people’s long presence in the history of the Amazon region.
Today the Kuruaya form a very small population, around two hundred people, according to available data. The people’s traditional language, from the Munduruku family, is in a critical situation, since there are almost no fluent speakers left, with mostly isolated words kept by the older generations. Most people, especially the younger ones, speak Portuguese day to day, even though a sense of belonging and Kuruaya identity remain alive.
Despite their small size and the pressures endured over time, the Kuruaya continue seeking to preserve their memory, their territory, and their identity as a distinct people. Living alongside the surrounding society, the gradual loss of their mother tongue, and the defense of their land are part of this community’s daily challenges.

The Kuruaya live simply, tied to the land and rivers of the Amazon, with farming, hunting, fishing, and gathering as the traditional foundations of their livelihood, now joined by other kinds of work and relationships with the society around them. Community life and kinship ties remain important in the people’s social organization.
In recent decades, the Kuruaya have faced serious difficulties, such as invasions of their territory and the presence of mining companies and illegal miners, who have contaminated the river’s waters with mercury. These problems, combined with the risk of the mother tongue disappearing and pressure on traditional ways of life, deeply mark the community’s present, as they work to protect their land and pass on their culture to new generations.
The Kuruaya’s traditional worldview is tied to ethnic religions, marked by the perception of a world inhabited by spiritual forces present in the forest, the rivers, and the surrounding nature. In this view, customs inherited from ancestors, their own narratives, and practices passed down orally help explain life, the origin of the people, and their relationship with the unseen world.
A small portion of the community has had some contact with Christianity, but the gospel’s influence remains very limited among them. Most of the people remain within their spiritual tradition, and knowledge of a faith centered on Jesus Christ is still something distant for the great majority of the Kuruaya.
The Kuruaya face needs that are both spiritual and practical. On the spiritual level, they lack opportunities to hear, in a clear and respectful way, the message of hope and reconciliation found in Jesus Christ, along a path that honors their identity as a people. On the practical level, they face the fragility of being so few, the risk of losing their mother tongue completely, threats to their territory, and health harmed by water contamination and the presence of predatory activities. To intercede for them is to bring before God both the preservation of their life and culture and the opening of their hearts.
