Who they are

The Miranha are an indigenous people who inhabit the Amazon, living mainly along the middle Solimões River and the lower Japurá River, in the state of Amazonas. Their ancestral origins trace back to the Caquetá and Cahuinari river region, in territory that today corresponds to Colombia, and part of the people remains on that side of the border. The history of the Miranha in Brazil is marked by forced displacement, especially from the nineteenth century onward, when many were subjected to exploitative systems tied to rubber extraction. Despite this, they rebuilt their identity and resisted attempts to erase their culture.

The language traditionally associated with the people is Bora, closely related to the Miranha speech, belonging to a set of kindred languages of the western Amazon. In Brazil, however, everyday use of this language has weakened across generations, and Portuguese has come to predominate in most communities, while groups in Colombia still preserve the ancestral speech. This linguistic loss is part of the challenges the people currently face in preserving their memory.

Today the Miranha live in riverside communities and on indigenous lands, maintaining ties with relatives on both sides of the border. They are living through a moment of identity affirmation, seeking to recover traditions, strengthen recognition of their people, and pass on to new generations what has been preserved of their culture.

How they live

The livelihood of the Miranha is tied to the resources of the Amazon forest and rivers. Fishing, hunting, gathering, and cultivation in small garden plots, especially manioc and its derivatives, are part of the traditional way of life. Social organization rests on family and community ties, and riverside life shapes the rhythm of activities according to the rivers’ floods and low water periods.

Among the current challenges are the defense of their territories, the weakening of the ancestral language, pressure from outside activities on the forest, and the need to keep cultural memory alive. Exchange initiatives between the Miranha of Brazil and Colombia have sought to reconnect relatives and strengthen their shared identity, in an effort of cultural rebuilding that involves the communities.

What they believe

The worldview of the Miranha is rooted in traditional ethnic religions, in which the spiritual world is deeply connected to the forest, the rivers, and the beings that inhabit them. In this view, there are forces and spirits associated with nature, and practices passed down by elders seek to maintain balance between people and the invisible world, with rituals, songs, and ancestral knowledge holding a central place in community life.

Christianity has a very limited presence among the people, reaching only a small portion. The great majority remain tied to traditional beliefs, and the gospel is still little known or understood within Miranha communities.

Needs

The Miranha need to know the love of God revealed in Jesus in a way that respects and engages with their identity and their history of suffering and resistance. There is a need for the gospel to be communicated in an accessible and faithful way, reaching a people among whom the Christian faith is practically unknown. On a practical level, they face challenges in defending their territories, preserving their language and culture, and caring for the health and well-being of riverside communities. Intercession for this people calls for compassion, patience, and sensitivity toward their journey.

What to pray for
Intercede for this people
That the love of God would reach the heart of every Miranha family.
That the love of God would reach the heart of every Miranha family.
That the love of God would reach the heart of every Miranha family.
That the love of God would reach the heart of every Miranha family.
That faithful and respectful ways of communicating the gospel to this people would arise.
For the preservation of the Miranha language, memory, and culture.
For the protection of their territories and the health of the riverside communities.
For the few Christians among the Miranha, that they would stand firm and bear witness with wisdom.
For the reconnection of relatives in Brazil and Colombia, and for the hope that comes from Christ.
