Who they are

The Kalapalo are an indigenous people who inhabit the Upper Xingu region, within the Xingu Indigenous Territory in the state of Mato Grosso. They belong to the group of peoples speaking languages of the Carib family who live in that part of the territory, sharing with their neighbors a way of life and a cultural universe that are very similar, even as they maintain their own distinct identity. Their language, Kuikuro-Kalapalo, belongs to this same language family and continues to be spoken in the daily life of the villages, passed down to new generations.

According to available data, they number around 700 people, spread across villages located along rivers and tributaries in the southern part of the territory. They were among the first peoples of the Upper Xingu to establish contact with the surrounding society in the mid twentieth century, and over the following decades they faced the impact of epidemics and profound changes in their surroundings.

Despite all these pressures, the Kalapalo strongly preserve their social organization, their ceremonies, and their relationship with the land. Community life remains centered on the village, on kinship ties, and on the traditions inherited from their ancestors, which continue to give meaning to the people’s existence.

How they live

The Kalapalo live in traditionally organized villages, sustaining themselves mainly through fishing in the region’s rivers, hunting, gathering, and cultivating garden plots, especially manioc, which forms the basis of their diet. Social life is marked by a strong sense of community, exchange between villages, and a division of tasks according to kinship and age. During the dry season, when food is more abundant, they hold large public rituals, moments of music, dance, and gatherings with members of other communities.

Craftwork, the making of ceremonial objects, and knowledge of the environment are part of the heritage that sustains the people’s identity. Like many indigenous peoples, the Kalapalo face contemporary challenges, such as pressure on their territory, environmental changes, health issues, and growing contact with outside society, all of which require constant effort to preserve their language and way of life.

What they believe

The Kalapalo worldview is grounded in their ethnic religions, which encompass nearly the entire people. Their understanding of the world is deeply tied to nature, the rivers, and the forest, and is populated by spiritual beings and ancestral stories that explain the origin of things and guide the community’s conduct. Rituals, songs, and ceremonies play a central role, connecting the living to the unseen world and renewing the bonds among people and with the land.

The message of the gospel of Jesus Christ is virtually unknown among them, and only a minimal portion identify as Christian. The people remain, almost entirely, without access to the knowledge of Christ in their own language and within their own way of understanding the world.

Needs

The Kalapalo lack access to the message of the gospel in a way that respects and engages with their language and culture, since almost none of them know Jesus Christ. There are also practical needs calling for intercession, such as health care, the strengthening of the community in the face of outside pressures, and the preservation of their territory and language. May they find hope and full life without losing what constitutes their identity as a people.
