Timnah was a town located on the border between the territory of Judah and that of Dan, in the transition zone between the hills of Judea and the plain where the Philistines lived.
The Bible first mentions Timnah in the story of Judah and Tamar, in the book of Genesis. It was there that Judah traveled to shear his sheep, a journey that reopened an unresolved family matter.
After the conquest of Canaan, Timnah appears in the list of towns marking the border between Judah and Dan.
Its best known episode is the story of Samson. It was in Timnah that he fell in love with a Philistine woman, against his parents’ wishes, and there began the conflicts that would lead him to confront the Philistine people for years.
Centuries later, during the reign of Ahaz, Timnah was seized by the Philistines, a sign of Judah’s weakening before its enemies.
The story of this border town shows how God can work even amid complicated human choices, fulfilling his purposes through imperfect people.
