Who they are

The Bundelas are a Rajput clan from central India whose name gave rise to the region of Bundelkhand, a land of fortresses and kingdoms that they themselves built and defended over centuries. Heirs to the Rajput title, which means “son of a ruler,” they still carry today the pride of a lineage of warriors and nobles who withstood empires and held territory under their command.

Speaking mostly Hindi, with a portion still using Bundeli at home, the Bundelas keep alive the memory of kings and battles that shaped the history of central India. This heritage of valor and nobility remains central to how they see themselves and how they are seen by their neighbors, and it stands as the most defining trait of their social identity.

History and origin

The exact origin of the Bundelas is uncertain, but the clan gained strength starting in the 14th century, when Rajput lineages began settling in central India. In the centuries that followed, the Bundelas became regional protagonists: they allied with other Rajput defenders in resistance to the advancing Mughal empire, and by founding and ruling the kingdom of Orchha from 1531 onward, they gave their name to the very region still called Bundelkhand today.

Between the 17th and 18th centuries, Bundela rulers such as Chhatrasal founded independent kingdoms and confronted the Mughals, consolidating a tradition of armed resistance that is still remembered with pride by the people.

How they live

Descendants of a warrior nobility that for centuries ruled fortresses and territories in Bundelkhand, many Bundelas today live by small businesses or manual labor, a notable distance between a past of command and the present day. Even so, pride in the lineage remains alive: recounting the military feats of their ancestors is a central part of identity and of family conversation.

The caste structure organizes marriages, alliances, and each family’s place in the Hindu social hierarchy. Recognized as one of the highest status groups among the castes of northern India, the Bundelas cultivate a code of honor that prizes courage, loyalty to the clan, and the memory of the kings and chiefs who gave their name to the very region where they live.

What they believe

The Bundelas are Hindu, and their faith is deeply tied to the warrior and noble caste identity they carry from birth. Religious devotion blends with reverence for royal ancestors and the clan’s military feats, so that the practice of faith reinforces, at the same time, the family’s social standing within the Hindu hierarchy.

Belonging to one of the highest status castes among the Rajputs confers a sense of duty and destiny that runs through their religion: honoring the gods and honoring the lineage go together, and abandoning one would mean shaking the other. This fusion of faith and caste honor makes conversion a matter that involves not only personal belief, but the entire network of family and community.

Language and the Bible

Most Bundelas speak Hindi in daily life, a language for which the Bible has long been fully available, in numerous printed and digital formats. A portion of the people still use Bundeli, an Indo-Aryan language of Bundelkhand, at home and in community life.

Despite the Bible being accessible in Hindi, the written text reaches few Bundela households: the caste identifies more with the oral tradition of its historical feats than with the personal reading of Scripture.

Barriers to the gospel

To be Bundela is to carry a name tied to the nobility and warrior valor of Bundelkhand, and this historical pride acts as armor against the gospel: accepting the message of Jesus sounds, to many, like giving up the caste prestige that sustains their social identity. Belonging to Hinduism is intertwined with the honor of the lineage, so that any move toward the Christian faith is read as a rupture with family and with the memory of ancestors.

Needs

The gap between the historical prestige of the lineage and the reality of many families who today live by small businesses and manual labor points to a real need for economic opportunity and social mobility. Spiritually, the Bundelas have almost no contact with Christian communities, leaving them isolated from any living witness of the gospel.

There is also a lack of people willing to cross the barriers of caste and lineage pride to build close relationships with Bundela families and share, with respect, the message of Jesus.

Intercede for this people
For more Bundela families reading and coming to know the Scriptures already available in Hindi.
That the Bundela people would understand the value of belonging to God's royal family.
