Biografia

Anyone who has ever welcomed guests into their home knows the tension between taking care of everything and truly being present with the person who has arrived. Martha, sister of Mary and Lazarus, lived out that tension in a very concrete way: she had Jesus at her table, in her own home in Bethany, and it changed her life.

Martha was the more practical sister in the family. When Jesus visited Bethany, she threw herself into the preparations while Mary sat at his feet to listen to him. Bothered, Martha complained that she was doing everything alone, and Jesus answered with tenderness: Mary had chosen the better part, and it would not be taken from her.

Some time later, Lazarus fell ill. Martha and Mary sent word to Jesus, but he arrived only four days after her brother’s death. It was Martha who went out first to meet him, while he was still on the way, and told him what she felt: if he had been there, Lazarus would not have died.

Even in her grief, Martha declared something enormous: she believed Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God. But when he ordered the stone removed from the tomb, she hesitated, reminding him that the body already smelled. Faith and doubt living side by side in the same person, on the same day.

Jesus called Lazarus, and he came out of the tomb alive. Days later, on Jesus’s last visit to Bethany before the cross, Martha again served at the table, and Mary anointed his feet with perfume. The two sisters, so different from each other, kept welcoming the same Lord, each in her own way.

Martha is not remembered as someone perfect, but as someone real: anxious, courageous, full of faith, and yet insecure in the face of death. Anyone today who rushes between tasks and guests, between serving and believing, finds in her a companion. Jesus did not dismiss her hospitality; he only asked that she also stop to listen to him.

Retrato

Opened her home to receive Jesus and his disciples in Bethany, despite the work it required (Luke 10:38)

Did not give up turning to Jesus in the face of illness and then death: she first sent word that Lazarus was sick, and once he had died, she went out to meet Jesus (John 11:3, 20)

Made one of the clearest confessions of faith in the Gospels, recognizing Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God (John 11:27)

Kept serving with generosity even after being corrected by Jesus, without holding a grudge (John 12:2)

Let anxiety over serving take the place of attention to Jesus, and even blamed her sister for not helping (Luke 10:40)

Doubted that Jesus could do anything in the face of Lazarus's already-completed death, even after confessing faith in him (John 11:39)

Lições e legado
Lições de vida

Serving Jesus is good, but listening to Jesus comes first; the most urgent agenda may not be the most important one

It is possible to confess great truths about Jesus and still doubt him in the face of concrete pain; faith grows in that space

Jesus corrects with love, not contempt; being rebuked by him is no reason to pull away, but to draw near

Genuine hospitality remains a valuable gift when it flows from communion with Jesus, not from anxiety

Legado missionário

Martha reminds us that hosting travelers and serving meals can be as spiritual a ministry as preaching, something central for those who host missionaries and foreigners today

Her confession amid pain shows that proclaiming Jesus as the Christ does not depend on having all feelings resolved, which encourages those who evangelize in contexts of suffering

Martha's home in Bethany was a support point for Jesus outside Jerusalem; communities that host those who serve God carry on that same role

Her story shows that serving and worshiping are not in competition, but need balance, a warning for missionary teams overloaded with tasks
