Every person carries a label they wish they could erase: a mistake from the past, a shameful profession, a reputation the whole town knows. Rahab lived with one of these labels her whole life, but she discovered it did not have to be the final word on who she was.
She lived in Jericho, a walled city of Canaan, and worked as a prostitute, making a living on the margins of society (Josh 2:1). It was in her house, built against the city wall, that two spies sent by Joshua hid before surveying the promised land.
When the king of Jericho sent for them, Rahab hid the men under stalks of flax on the roof and lied to the messengers, telling them the spies had already left (Josh 2:4-6). It was an act of courage that put her own life at risk.
More than cunning, there was faith. Rahab told the spies she had already heard of the LORD’s works in Egypt and in the wilderness, and she confessed, “the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below” (Josh 2:11). She asked only that they spare her family when the city fell.
The spies sealed the agreement: a scarlet cord in the window would mark the house to be spared (Josh 2:18-21). When the walls of Jericho fell, Joshua kept the promise, and Rahab and her family were brought out alive, going on to live among the people of Israel (Josh 6:22-25).
Rahab’s story does not end there. She became the wife of Salmon and the mother of Boaz, entering the line that would reach David and, centuries later, Jesus (Matt 1:5). The New Testament celebrates her twice more: as an example of faith (Heb 11:31) and of faith proved by works (James 2:25).
God does not measure a person by the résumé she presents, but by the faith she is willing to risk. Rahab had no inheritance in Israel, no clean past, only a decision to trust the God she had heard about. That was enough to change her story and enter the story of Jesus.
