Biografia

Who has never dreamed of holding the seat of honor, being seen, sitting beside the one in charge? That very human desire ran in the veins of a fisherman who left everything to follow an itinerant teacher, and who, even after years at his side, still wrestled with the same ambition.

James was fishing on the Sea of Galilee with his father, Zebedee, when Jesus passed by the shore and called him, along with his brother John. He left the nets and the boat at once and followed the Master without hesitation (Mark 1:19-20).

Jesus gave him and John a telling nickname: Boanerges, sons of thunder (Mark 3:17). Their explosive temperament showed when a Samaritan village refused to welcome Jesus, and the two brothers wanted to call down fire from heaven to destroy it (Luke 9:54).

Even so, James belonged to Jesus’ innermost circle, alongside Peter and John. He saw Jairus’ daughter raised from death, was present on the mount of the Transfiguration, and went with Jesus deeper into the garden of Gethsemane on the night of his betrayal (Mark 5:37; 9:2; 14:33).

It was this privileged access that fed his ambition. Through their mother, James and John asked Jesus for the two highest places in the kingdom, one at his right, the other at his left (Matthew 20:20-21), and the other ten disciples were indignant at the request.

Jesus did not merely rebuke the ambition, he asked whether they could drink the cup he was about to drink. They said yes, without understanding that they were accepting not a throne, but a cross (Mark 10:38-39).

The answer was fulfilled. James was the first of the twelve apostles to die for his faith, executed by the sword by order of Herod Agrippa I, still in the early years of the church (Acts 12:2).

James’ life shows that Jesus does not turn away those who come to him with misdirected ambition, he redirects it. The place of honor James sought became a path of surrender, and that same exchange is still offered to those who follow Jesus today.
