About the nation
About Andorra

Nestled in the high valleys of the Pyrenees, between France and Spain, Andorra is one of the smallest countries in Europe: about 80 thousand inhabitants live across seven parishes scattered among mountains that rise above 2,900 meters. Catalan is the official language, but on the streets of the capital, Andorra la Vella, Spanish, Portuguese, and French can also be heard, a reflection of a population in which those born in the country are a minority compared to immigrants coming mainly from the Iberian Peninsula.

The country has a unique identity: it is a co-principality (government shared between two heads of state), jointly governed by the Bishop of Urgell, in Spain, and the President of France, a legacy of medieval agreements sealed in the 13th century. This origin left deep marks on Andorran faith, historically Catholic and tied to the Diocese of Urgell. Romanesque stone churches, some from the 9th century, dot the valleys and tell centuries of Christian devotion in the mountains.

Today, more than nine in ten Andorrans identify as Christians, the vast majority Catholic. Religious freedom is broad, and hostility against Christians is practically nonexistent. The challenge is not persecution but cooling: as in much of Europe, religious practice has declined, and many live a faith that is more cultural than personal, in an environment marked by prosperity, tourism, and a drift away from religion.

The economy revolves around tourism, ski resorts, and tax-advantaged commerce, which attract millions of visitors a year. This wealth brings comfort, but also the risk of attachment to material goods and a life in which God becomes unnecessary. Among the immigrants there are small Muslim and Hindu communities, and there are groups that remain without a living Christian witness in their own language and culture.

Andorra is a nation of few, but with open doors. Its stability, its hospitality, and the free movement of peoples make it a place where the gospel can be sown with freedom. Prayer turns toward the historic faith of the mountains burning again as living reality, and toward the newly arrived finding in Christ the home they sought in these valleys.

Geography, cities, and climate

Andorra is a small, landlocked country, entirely nestled in the eastern Pyrenees, between France to the north and Spain to the south. The entire territory is mountainous, with dozens of peaks, glacial valleys, and mountain rivers; the highest point is Coma Pedrosa, at 2,942 meters. The population is concentrated in the valleys, especially around the capital, Andorra la Vella, the highest capital in Europe.

Areas of spiritual battle and cultural captivity to cover in prayer. Tap each point to understand:

Prosperity and consumption can take the place of God in the heart.

Historic faith has cooled, and many live a religiosity that is merely cultural.

Identifying as Christian without a living relationship with Christ.

Stability and well-being can breed spiritual self-sufficiency.

Prosperous living tends to isolate and weaken the communal bonds of faith.

The logic of commerce and profit can set priorities above the eternal.

Young people increasingly distant from the church and the practice of faith.

Entire communities without a Christian witness in their own language.

Freedom and reach
Religious persecution

Andorra is one of the safest places in the world for Christians. The Constitution guarantees religious freedom and recognizes the special historic relationship with the Catholic Church, the faith of the vast majority of the population. There is no significant hostility, restrictions, or violence against Christians.

Andorra’s challenge is not persecution but indifference. As in much of prosperous, secularized Europe, religious practice has declined, and faith risks becoming a cultural inheritance without personal life. Small Muslim and Hindu minorities, tied to immigration, live in peace. Prayer turns less toward the protection of believers and more toward the revival of a dormant faith.

The persecution score runs from 0 to 100: the higher it is, the greater the pressure on Christians.

Unreached people groups

Andorra has a small, majority-Christian population, with Catalan-Andorrans, Spaniards, and Portuguese forming the largest groups. There are two groups considered unreached, linked to immigration: Moroccan Arabs and South Asians, each numbering a few hundred people and without an established Christian witness in their own language and culture. The prayer field includes both the revival of the historic faith and reaching these small, recently arrived groups.

What to pray for
Intercession for Andorra
For a revival of Andorra's historic faith, that the Christian heritage of the mountains may become personal, living reality.
For the new generations of Andorrans, increasingly distant from the church, that they may come to know Christ.
For Spanish, Portuguese, and French immigrants, that they may find communities of faith that welcome them.
For the small unreached groups, Moroccan Arabs and South Asians, that they may hear the gospel in their own language.
That prosperity and tourism may not harden hearts, but open space for the search for God.
For the Church in Andorra, Catholic and evangelical, that it may live with fervor and unity amid secularization.
For the co-princes and leaders of the country, for wisdom and integrity in governing the nation.
That Andorra's religious freedom may bear fruit in a bold and loving witness of Christ in the valleys of the Pyrenees.

Send and sustain

Not everyone goes, everyone takes part

Not everyone goes. Everyone takes part.

Behind every worker among these peoples stands a network of people who pray without ceasing, care for the family left behind, and faithfully sustain the work. Sending is mission too.

Start with your church: introduce this nation, adopt it in ongoing prayer, and walk alongside those God is raising up to go.
