Who they are

The Andh are a tribal people of western India, officially recognized as a scheduled tribe and concentrated mainly in the state of Maharashtra, with a smaller presence in Telangana and neighboring regions. They live chiefly in the districts of Parbhani, Nanded, Yavatmal, and Akola, where life revolves around the land and the harvest.

Their origin traces back to the ancient Satavahana dynasty, also called the Andhra dynasty, which ruled parts of central and southern India between the third century BC and the second century AD; the group’s own name comes from the Sanskrit term linked to that historic region. Over time, they set aside their original Dravidian language and came to speak a language of their own belonging to the Indo-Aryan family, Andh, alongside Marathi, which is now the majority language among them.

They are an essentially agrarian people, divided into two main internal branches, the Vertali and the Khaltali, who maintain a long-standing social distinction between them. This blend of deep historical roots, a language of their own at risk of disappearing, and a strong bond with the land gives the Andh a well-defined identity within India’s ethnic mosaic.

History and origin

The memory of the Andh people goes back to the Satavahana dynasty, also known as the Andhra dynasty, which ruled regions of central and southern India between the third century BC and the second century AD, and from which many scholars derive the group's own name. With the decline of that kingdom, the ancestors of the Andh moved, over the centuries, from a past tied to Dravidian languages toward adopting a language of their own from the Indo-Aryan family, shaped by constant contact with Marathi.

This process of linguistic and cultural assimilation continues to this day: more and more families speak Marathi at home, and the original Andh language keeps losing ground generation after generation, a sign of how the people's history is also a history of constant adaptation to larger neighboring communities.

How they live

The Andh sustain their livelihood mainly from the land: they practice a system of crop rotation, alternating the fields under cultivation to preserve the soil, and grow grains such as jowar millet, often supplementing their income as farm laborers on neighboring fields. Social life is organized around two internal lineages, the Vertali and the Khaltali, which historically keep a certain distance from one another, even avoiding intermarriage.

Work follows the rhythm of the seasons and the harvest, and the simple tools of daily life reflect a subsistence economy passed down from generation to generation. Even living close to other, larger populations of Maharashtra, the Andh preserve habits and kinship ties that set them apart as a distinct community.

What they believe

The Andh are Hindus, and their faith is expressed in celebrations such as Dussehra, Diwali, Sankranti, and Pola, a festival honoring cattle that celebrates the central role of livestock in agricultural life. A distinctive feature is devotion to the twelve Shivkathi, a set of twelve shrines dedicated to Shiva, whose cycle of worship closes with offerings of jowar millet asking for prosperity for the crops.

This faith is deeply intertwined with the agricultural calendar and with the tribe’s identity: the rites mark planting, harvest, and the changing seasons, weaving religion, land, and belonging into a single fabric of community life.

Language and the Bible

The people have two heart languages: Andh, which many already exchange for Marathi at home, and Marathi, the majority language among them. The complete Bible exists in Marathi, but there is no translation of their own in Andh, and the tribe’s language is at risk of being lost before it even receives the Scriptures. Without a version that speaks to the heart of Andh identity, the gospel still arrives, when it arrives, borrowed from another language.

Barriers to the gospel

To be Andh is, in practice, to be Hindu: the festivals, the worship at Shiva’s shrines, and the agricultural rites are woven into the tribe’s identity, and abandoning them feels like abandoning one’s own family. The internal divide between Vertali and Khaltali also absorbs much of the group’s social energy, leaving little room for ideas from outside. Without a Christian community nearby and without Scripture in their own language, first contact with the gospel remains rare.

Needs

Crop rotation and work as day laborers secure basic subsistence, but leave little margin for years of poor harvest or the lean season, and access to education and services tends to be limited in the areas where they live. There is also a quiet but profound need: that the Andh language, now giving way to Marathi, not disappear before it gains a voice of its own to tell the story of Jesus.

Spiritually, the people almost entirely lack a lived Christian witness among them, neighbors who know and share the gospel, and any local community of faith to turn to.
