Kunbi Ghatole

Kunbi is an ancient term, used for generations to describe the peasant farmers who sustained the agrarian economy of western India. From this common peasant base, many regional subgroups branched off over time, each tied to its own region or tradition within the same root stock.

The Ghatole are one of these branches, and their very name preserves the memory of their place of origin: a stretch of hills and valleys that shaped the group's way of life and identity within the larger body of Kunbis, down to the present day.

The life of the Kunbi Ghatole revolves around the land: many are landowning farmers, and others work as day laborers on their neighbors’ fields. The agricultural cycle marks the seasons of the year and organizes family life around planting and harvest.

Within the home, food customs differ by gender: men eat meat, while women follow a vegetarian diet. Marriage almost always takes place within the community itself, with a preference for unions between cousins, and inheritance passes from father to son. The community also permits divorce and remarriage, something not every neighboring tradition allows, which shows a certain flexibility within the family rules that the Kunbi Ghatole follow.

The Kunbi Ghatole are Hindu, and their faith is intertwined with the group’s social standing: as a caste placed in an intermediate category within India’s social hierarchy, religious identity reinforces the community’s place within the wider society.

In daily practice, devotion tends to be pragmatic: they seek out and honor the deities from whom they expect protection and favor for their family and their fields, more than following a single fixed devotional path. The custom of marrying within the community helps keep this identity cohesive, binding faith, kinship, and belonging into a single social fabric that spans generations and also shapes daily religious life.

The Marathi language has had a complete Bible for about two centuries, the fruit of pioneering work by translators who sought simple language accessible to rural people. Today the text also circulates in audio and digital apps, and there is an abundance of evangelistic material in Marathi that can reach the Kunbi Ghatole as a gift, from person to person, even though knowledge of Scripture within the community remains very rare.

There are practically no followers of Christ among the Kunbi Ghatole, and faith remains closely tied to caste and family identity. For this reason, the most likely path for the gospel runs first through the community’s leaders: if they recognize the lordship of Christ, they open the way for others to do the same, since decisions of this kind tend to be made together, as a group, rather than individually.

The community lacks, above all, someone to carry the gospel to its leaders, since it is through them that the message would have a real chance of reaching the rest of the people. There is also a lack of intercessors and workers willing to walk alongside the Kunbi Ghatole with patience, respecting the pace and the communal decision-making structure that defines them.

What is lacking, above all, is presence: someone who will live nearby, learn the language and customs, and earn the trust needed to be heard by a community that today knows practically no follower of Christ in its midst.
