Who they are

The Pashtun Kohistani are a highland people of Pakistan, inhabitants of the rugged mountains of Kohistan, between the Indus River and the Swat and Panjkora river basins in the north of the country. They live mainly in the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, in narrow valleys where the landscape isolates entire communities for much of the year.

Although they inhabit a region historically marked by Dardic languages, the Pashtun Kohistani adopted Pashto as their language of daily life and today identify with the wider Pashtun family, inheriting from it their tribal identity, code of honor, and belonging to the Islamic faith. This combination of local roots and broader Pashtun identity makes the people a link between the mountain world of Kohistan and the vast Pashtun nation that extends into Afghanistan.

They are known for a life bound to the land and for faithfulness to customs passed down from generation to generation, in a delicate balance between the region’s Dardic heritage and the Pashtun culture that today shapes their speech, their faith, and the way they organize community life.

History and origin

The people's history goes back to the Dardic communities that occupied Kohistan long before the Pashtuns arrived in the region. Over the centuries, successive waves of Pashtun migration moved through the Swat and Indus valleys, and over time entire communities of Dardic origin came to adopt the Pashtun language, customs, and identity, a process that unfolded across generations.

This encounter between the mountain people and Pashtun culture gave rise to the identity known today as Pashtun Kohistani: a people who retain the geographic isolation of Kohistan yet see and present themselves to the world as Pashtun.

How they live

Life in Kohistan follows the rhythm of the mountains. Families grow wheat, corn, and barley on the few flat terraces available, and since the land allows only one harvest a year, they supplement their livelihood by raising goats and cattle, driven to higher pastures as the season changes. This seasonal movement shapes the calendar of entire villages.

Social organization revolves around tribe and clan, which define obligations of loyalty, settle disputes, and sustain kinship ties. Hospitality to visitors and the defense of family honor are central values, inherited from the Pashtun code and lived out with equal force in the communities of Kohistan.

What they believe

The Pashtun Kohistani are almost entirely Sunni Muslim, and they live out this faith as an inseparable part of their identity. Religious practice is interwoven with tribal and ethnic identity: to be Pashtun Kohistani is, in practice, to be Muslim, and this fusion gives religion a weight that goes beyond personal devotion and becomes a mark of belonging to the group and to the land of their ancestors.

Alongside formal Islam, folk beliefs and practices tied to the spiritual protection of family and harvest survive, especially in more isolated communities in the high valleys of Kohistan. Leaving Islam is understood not merely as a religious break but as an affront to family honor and to the people themselves.

Language and the Bible

The complete Bible exists in Pashto, the language most Pashtun Kohistani use in daily life, and the Jesus film and audio recordings are also available in that language. Even so, actual access is another matter: in remote mountain villages, oral tradition prevails over reading, and few Pashtun Kohistani have ever had direct contact with the Scriptures in their own language of communication.

Barriers to the gospel

To be Pashtun Kohistani is, for the vast majority, to be Muslim: faith is so bound to ethnic identity and the code of honor that following Jesus is seen as betraying one’s family, clan, and people. The isolation of the Kohistan mountains, with villages reachable only by narrow trails for much of the year, adds to this identity barrier and makes any contact with a Christian or a church rare.

Needs

The harsh mountain life, dependent on a single annual harvest and constant movement in search of pasture, leaves little room for the unexpected: a drought or a harsher winter can threaten the livelihood of entire villages. Roads, schools, and health services still fail to reach the most remote valleys.

In the spiritual realm, the need is just as great: almost no Pashtun Kohistani has ever heard the gospel from someone of their own people, and the few who came to believe would find few brothers and sisters in the faith, welcoming community, or discipleship nearby.
