Who they are

The Pulayan Thanda live in the state of Kerala, in southwestern India, forming a subcaste within the broader Pulayan group, historically placed at the base of the Hindu social hierarchy. They speak Malayalam, the language that also unites millions of other Kerala residents, and maintain their own identity that distinguishes them from other Pulayan subcastes spread across southern India.

They are recognized for their manual skill, especially in basket weaving and other handcrafts passed down from generation to generation. They also cultivate a rich tradition of oral storytelling and folk songs, a heritage that carries the collective memory of the people through difficult times and circumstances. Music and dance, to the sound of drums and stringed instruments, hold a central place in moments of rest and celebration.

Mostly landless, the Pulayan Thanda have built over generations an identity marked by both social exclusion and cultural resilience, traits that continue to shape their life in Kerala.

History and origin

The origin of the Pulayan traces back to the oldest agrarian populations of Kerala, placed by the Hindu caste system in a position of servitude to the land and to local landowners, with rigid rules of physical distance from the upper castes. This condition of forced labor and exclusion spanned centuries and deeply shaped the people's identity.

In the early twentieth century, leaders who emerged from within the Pulayan community itself began demanding access to education, public roads, and the dignity denied for generations, starting a slow process of social change that still marks the people's collective memory today. Within this broader context, the Thanda subcaste kept its life concentrated in Kerala, distinct from other Pulayan branches found elsewhere in southern India.

How they live

The life of most Pulayan Thanda still revolves around agricultural work on others’ land, often with low pay and little stability. The lack of their own land remains a hallmark of the community’s daily experience, alongside crafts such as basket weaving that supplement family income.

When not occupied with fieldwork, the Pulayan Thanda find in songs, stories passed down from parents to children, and communal dance a form of expression and belonging. These oral traditions sustain the people’s memory and strengthen bonds between families and neighbors in the face of the social hardships faced throughout their history.

What they believe

The predominant religion among the Pulayan Thanda is Hinduism, lived out from a historically inferior position within the caste hierarchy of southern India. This social position directly affects religious practice: for a long time, access to temples and worship spaces of the upper castes was denied to the community, which pushed part of popular devotion toward local deities and rituals of their own, distinct from those worshiped by the dominant castes.

Spiritual decisions within the people tend to closely follow community leadership, and breaking away from established religious paths can also mean breaking away from the network of social belonging that sustains the daily life of family and neighborhood. This mutual dependence between faith and community makes any change in spiritual direction a decision that is rarely just personal.

Language and the Bible

The Pulayan Thanda speak Malayalam, a language that has the complete Bible and a vast body of Christian production, including reading, audio, and media materials widely available in Kerala. The distance between the Pulayan Thanda and these Scriptures is not one of translation or material access, but of invitation: rarely does anyone reach the community to share the text in the language they already understand well.

Barriers to the gospel

The main barrier to the gospel among the Pulayan Thanda is social, not linguistic or geographic: community leadership sets the spiritual tone of the group, and following a different path than the established one can mean breaking away from one’s own network of belonging. With no known follower of Christ in the community to this day, anyone who considers this change faces alone the weight of distancing themselves from family and neighbors.

Needs

The historic lack of their own land and dependence on poorly paid agricultural work keep many Pulayan Thanda families in economic vulnerability, with little room for savings or to face unforeseen circumstances. Added to this material need is the absence of any local Christian community: there are currently no followers of Jesus among the Pulayan Thanda who could walk alongside family and neighbors in the pursuit of hope and mutual support.

Entire families also lack spaces where the dignity denied by the caste hierarchy can be restored, and voices that proclaim, in the community’s own language, an identity that does not depend on the place imposed on them in the social scale.
