Velakkithalanayan

The origin of the Velakkithalanayan is intertwined with the very formation of Kerala's caste system, in southwestern India, in which groups of specialized servants, such as those who took care of haircutting and associated rituals, occupied a defined place in the social hierarchy alongside farmers, merchants, and priests. This hereditary role shaped not only the families' livelihood but also whom they could marry and live alongside, keeping the people cohesive across generations down to the present day.

The trade of barber is what has historically defined this people within Kerala’s caste mosaic, and many families still live from it, alongside others who today devote themselves to trade and agriculture. They live mainly in Cannanore district, in the far northwest of the state, speaking, reading, and writing in Malayalam.

Life revolves around the extended family: it is common for several generations to share the same house, and upon the father’s death the children inherit the family’s belongings, with the eldest responsible for caring for the household. Marriages take place within the group itself, including between cousins, with a cash dowry paid, and the education of the children, especially the boys, is seen as a priority.

Like most castes in Kerala, the Velakkithalanayan follow Hinduism, and the region’s religiosity is intertwined with the group’s very social place: the trade, marriage, and kinship ties also carry a religious meaning, passed down within the family together with traditional customs and rituals. Faith shapes central life decisions, such as marrying within one’s own people and maintaining these ties across generations.

Matters of family and community, including requests for divorce and remarriage, go through the approval of the group’s council, which shows how Hindu religiosity and social organization go hand in hand in the daily life of the Velakkithalanayan.

The people’s language, Malayalam, has one of the oldest and most well established Bible translations in India, with the complete Bible available since the nineteenth century and later revisions of high literary quality. Scripture, then, is not lacking in the language: what is lacking is for it to reach the hands and understanding of the Velakkithalanayan, who rarely have contact with brothers and sisters in the faith from within their own caste and tradition.

Being Velakkithalanayan is tied to a precise place within Kerala’s caste system, and the faith that prevails in the region reinforces this identity inherited from father to son. Breaking with the group’s customs can mean breaking with the network of kinship that sustains marriage, trade, and communal life. Without a faith community that already speaks their own language and understands this caste reality, following Christ remains, for most, something distant and without a visible example within their own people.

Like many service castes in Kerala, the Velakkithalanayan face the transition from a traditional trade that is increasingly restricted to new forms of livelihood, such as agriculture and small trade, which requires preparation and opportunity for the new generations. The greatest need, however, is spiritual: there is today no recognizable Christian faith community within the people itself, which means that anyone who becomes interested in Jesus will hardly find a path of discipleship, fellowship, and growth in the faith in their own language and culture.
