Chloe

Período1st century AD (around AD 54)
Resumo
Chloe is mentioned only once in the Bible: her name gives its title to a group of believers, Chloe's household, who brought the apostle Paul news of the divisions in the church at Corinth. A discreet woman whose report helped shape one of the most widely read letters of the New Testament.

Biografia

Who has never had to bring uncomfortable news to someone who could solve the problem? Telling someone that things are not well, even without knowing how it will be received, takes a quiet kind of courage. It was that sort of act, far from the spotlight, that put Chloe’s name in the Bible.

Chloe appears only once in all of Scripture, and not even through her own words. The apostle Paul writes from Ephesus to the Christians of Corinth and says, “My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you” (1 Corinthians 1:11). The phrase “Chloe’s household” refers to people connected to her, perhaps relatives, servants, or associates, who brought Paul news of the Corinthian church.

What they reported was no small matter: the church in Corinth was split into rival groups, some clinging to Paul, others to Apollos, others to Peter, as if the gospel were grounds for dispute among factions (1 Corinthians 1:12). It was this report that gave Paul the immediate reason to write much of the letter we know today as 1 Corinthians.

It is not known whether Chloe lived in Corinth and sent people from her household to Ephesus, or whether she lived in Ephesus and received travelers coming from Corinth. Scholars discuss this question without reaching a definitive answer. The text also does not say whether she was rich or poor, only that a household bore her name and that people from that household cared enough about the truth to go to the apostle.

Chloe never gave a speech, never prophesied, and is never mentioned anywhere else in the Bible. Even so, her household was the channel God used to expose a real problem and open the way for the correction of an entire church.

How often is today’s reader called to be that same quiet channel: not the hero of the solution, but someone willing to tell the truth to whoever can help? Chloe’s story reminds us that God does not need famous names to act. He needs people willing not to stay silent about what they have seen.
